Completed in 2018 Chartist House is just one example of the programme of improvements that Jigsaw Homes Tameside have made to their portfolio of buildings. The 18 storey tower block, constructed in the 1970’s, was refurbished to a specification by architects BTP to improve both the appearance of the building and its thermal characteristics. The overall objective was to enhance the quality of life for tenants through a superior visual appearance and a more comfortable environment, especially in winter.
In addition to the application of external thermal insulation to meet current Building Regulations, a key element of the work involved replacing the windows at the end of the corridors.
In line with the requirements of Approved Document B and Approved Document K of The Building Regulations, FIEGER supplied a total of 32 no. FLW 32 SmoTec double-glazed louvre windows through Karmo Ltd, who organized the necessary building works and installation. The double-glazed elements comprised 6mm toughened outside, a 20mm Argon cavity and 6.38mm laminated inside.
Due to the concrete structure, a curtain walling system was installed as part of the new external cladding, to enable the vents to be fitted into the mullions and transoms, using box-section aluminium adapters fixed to the vent frames.
The vents were supplied with D+H LDF 100-70 24V DC motors, programmed for anti- trapping, which was wired to the building fire control system. The controls also allow for dual-purpose general ventilation in summer as well as emergency smoke control.
An overall U-value of 2.0 W/m2 K was achieved, which with a certified Class 4 low air leakage rate rating from EN 12207 provides a highly energy efficient feature of the refurbishment.
