Architects: Stephenson Bell, Manchester

Two colours of Eternit's high-pressure laminate cladding Lamina External and fibre cement Cedral Weatherboard have been used on a housing development at Chorlton Park in Manchester, by the Irwell Valley Housing Association and award winning private sector developers Urban Splash, which has won a RIBA award.

The original brief required 20 new homes to be built on the site of a disused petrol station, with an emphasis on space, light, warmth, flexibility, integration of external environment and maximisation of natural heat, ventilation and light.

Some of the new units were clad with Dark Grey 6mm Lamina External, fixed with colour matched screws on to timber battens. Access to the units is via timber-floored decks, with each balcony providing an extension of the livingspace overlooking the park and using massive Green-oak posts and beams from wind-damaged French forests. These are complemented by individual sliding louvered balcony screens for shade and privacy.

Maximisation of natural heat, ventilation and light was achieved by orientation of the living rooms, bedrooms being on the quiet side, and high levels of insulation and natural passive ventilation ensure low heating costs.

The whole site was devised to provide for both community and privacy, and although communal space is at a premium, collective space has been maximised through the extra wide galleys, Japanese-style garden in the central courtyard over the car park, and single main entrance that is also clad with Grey Green Lamina External.

Rear and courtyard elevations are clad in Eternit's 8mm Cedral Weatherboard that was painted White and Terracotta prior to delivery.
