Clay plain tiles from Marley satisfy a wide range of innovative roofing solutions

Typically specified for housing projects, Marley’s Acme Single Camber clay plain tiles have recently proven their versatility, after providing award winning finishes to builds across the country, including a dog re-homing centre and a public house.

Marley’s Acme Single Camber clay plain tiles in Heather Blend were specified for the roofing of The Dogs Trust rehoming centre in Shropshire, following recommendations from local planners. The project, which was roofed by R.G. Hinds Roofing Ltd, a member of the NFRC, is one of 17 purpose built centres across the UK and is now considered the “greenest” rehoming centre to date.

Paul Gibbons, project manager at McPhillips (Wellington) Ltd, explains: “This was a new build project on an existing site and we selected Marley’s clay tiles on the breadth of the range and extensive palette of colour options. We are delighted with the end result and have recently been received the Legacy Award for Sustainability at the West Midlands Constructing Excellence Awards 2012.”

Meanwhile, an old dilapidated public house on a main road in Lincolnshire has undergone drastic refurbishment.

Designer and project manager, Ian Carroll explains: “The existing roof featured hand-made clay tiles and I was determined to retain this traditional aesthetic by restoring the roof to its original format. The council were keen to see tile samples so I took advantage of Marley’s prompt sample service and the decision to use the Acme Single Camber in Red Smooth was set.

“Having specified Marley’s products in the past, I was confident specifying their clay range and matching ridge accessories. Now the roof is finished it looks absolutely spectacular! Since the project has been completed many people have commented on how lovely it looks – I am extremely pleased with the end result.”

The Acme Single Camber range offered both roofing projects excellent environmental credentials. Manufactured in the UK, all of Marley’s clay tiles can achieve an A+ rating in the BRE Green Guide to Specification and are accredited to BES 6001 Responsible Sourcing helping to make a significant contribution towards achieving the highest ratings under the Code for Sustainable Homes.

Rebecca Farren, campaign manager at Marley, adds: “Our clay tiles are specified for a wide range of projects, from residential new builds to commercial developments, and these two very different examples are a great demonstration of their versatility and why this makes them such a popular choice.

“Upon completion, the Dogs Trust rehoming centre was awarded the BREEAM Design Stage Outstanding certificate by the Building and Research Establishment. Furthermore, the pub project was awarded the Civic Trust Award, which is awarded to projects of the highest quality design have made a positive cultural, social or economic contribution to the local environment.”

Marley’s extensive range of clay tiles contains the widest choice of colour and camber options available in the UK. The clay tile range is available in more than 20 shades, as well as various textures, meeting the aesthetic and performance demands of all types of roofing applications.
