Creating a Sustainable Garage That Conforms to Letchworth’s Heritage Foundation Requirements

Conforming to Letchworth’s Heritage Foundation while creating a sustainable garage was one of the considerations Marley helped its customer overcome.

The project
The client wanted to build a garage for his house fit for the 21st century, which meant sustainability was the key. Located within Letchworth’s Heritage Foundation area, aesthetics was a priority.

To ensure the building was in keeping with everything around it, the roof pitch was kept the same as other buildings and the tiles chosen were Ashdown Handcrafted Plain Tiles, which blended in with the clay tiles used on the surrounding properties.

The addition of Marley SolarTiles took the project to another level. Michael Pearcy, the property owner, explains more.

“I am an engineer and write building specifications for people, so I know good products when I see them,” explained Michael. “Marley has been great from the start. The tiles we chose blended perfectly with the other housing in the area. We opted for them because we wanted a consistently good product that we can also use when re-roofing the house in the future.”

A key consideration for Michael was the sustainability aspect of the project. After consulting Marley on the best option and associated building regulations, he opted for integrated Marley SolarTiles in a 300wp panel. Once 18 panels are installed, they will generate up to 5.4KwP.

The tiles and solar panels were installed by David Males & Son.

“After laying the roof tiles on the garage, we installed Marley’s SolarTiles,” said David Males. “Declan, the Area Sales Manager from Marley, and his team came to the site to give us some training, which was really beneficial. After that, we got on with it. The SolarTiles are an excellent product and so simple to fit.”

Going above and beyond
Even when the pandemic caused logistics chaos, Marley ensured its customer had access to the products needed.

“We’ve been getting everything from our local supplier, Watts Roofing Supplies. However, when transport issues arose because of the pandemic, there were not enough lorries on the road, making it difficult to get supplies. But we borrowed a vehicle and went to Marley direct. They knew what I needed and loaded up everything we wanted. They were fantastic.

“The products we chose are working fantastically. Not only does the garage look amazing, but the actual payback from the SolarTiles is about £200 to £250 a month, which pays for the house. “
