Creating Accessible Outdoor Spaces at Sandgate SEND School

Creating Accessible Outdoor Spaces at Sandgate SEND School

As part of the £6 million expansion of Sandgate School's satellite campus in Kendal, Broxap designed, manufactured and installed a complete external cycle parking and covered walkway solution to support the school's new facilities.

Client: F Parkinson Ltd
Year: 2026

Linear Cycle Shelter

Broxap's Linear Cycle Shelter is manufactured from robust galvanised steel with a durable polycarbonate roof and is designed to withstand the demands of busy educational environments with minimal maintenance. Its modular construction allows it to be configured to suit the available space, while the open-fronted design ensures excellent visibility and creates a welcoming, accessible parking area.

By providing dedicated, weather-protected cycle parking, the shelter encourages pupils, staff and visitors to cycle to school with confidence, supporting healthier lifestyles and reducing reliance on car travel.

Sheffield Cycle Racks

Installed within the shelter, Sheffield Cycle Racks offer a simple yet highly effective cycle parking solution that accommodates a wide variety of bicycle types. Their familiar design allows cycles to be secured at both the frame and wheel, providing excellent stability and security while maximising the number of parking spaces available.

By creating dedicated, organised cycle parking, the installation helps reduce congestion around entrances, keeps access routes clear and encourages healthier, more sustainable journeys to school.

Burntwood Cantilever Canopies

To the side of the new extension, Broxap's Burntwood Cantilever Canopies were installed to provide sheltered space along the perimeter of the building. The cantilever design eliminates the need for front support columns, creating completely unobstructed space underneath that improves accessibility for all users, including wheelchair users, those with mobility aids and pupils requiring additional support.

Protection from rain and adverse weather ensures that pupils, staff and visitors can move comfortably and safely throughout the year, while helping to reduce water and debris being tracked into internal spaces.

Supporting an accessible and inclusive school environment

The external infrastructure forms part of Sandgate School's major expansion, which has significantly increased specialist teaching facilities for children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities.

The development includes additional classrooms, therapy spaces, sports facilities and improved learning environments, enabling the school to accommodate more pupils while bringing all secondary-age students together on a single campus.

The addition of high-quality cycle parking and sheltered walkways ensures the external environment supports the same high standards of accessibility, safety and inclusivity found throughout the new development.
