Type of works: securing of potentially hazardous electrical equipment with wire mesh safety fencing.

Wire mesh safety fencing supplied by Troax (UK) Limited has been used to secure potentially hazardous electrical equipment at a new data centre, recently set up by a leading financial institution. The fencing prevents unauthorised access to electrical control systems, which are located in a busy walkway within the new building.

To secure the series of server cabinets and air conditioning units, which extend for around 50m along a central corridor, Troax’s Caelum wire mesh panels were used to construct cages which completely enclose the electrical equipment, preventing tampering and ensuring that installation meets required Health and Safety standards.

Caelum wire mesh partitioning was ideal for the project as its tight 50 x 50mm mesh aperture size offers a high level of security as it is virtually impossible for a hand to reach through. In addition, the wire mesh, rather than solid steel, construction allows the effective penetration of sprinkler systems in the event of a fire, clearly an important requirement for this type of application.

The project was carried out in conjunction with Steel Arts Fabrication, who installed the architectural steelwork throughout the building such as steel platforms, stairs and other structures.

Doors, fitted with deadlocks, have been installed at intervals along the runs of fencing to provide access to authorised maintenance personnel.

Caelum panels are constructed from steel mesh welded to a tubular frame to give optimum strength between wire and tube. All panels incorporate specially designed horizontal tubes that give the panel additional strength while reinforcing and straightening the mesh, making each mesh structure exceptionally strong and sturdy.

Comments Sonnie Spencer at Steel Arts Fabrication: “Troax provided an excellent level of service for the project. Their Caelum wire mesh panel system is sturdy, of a very high quality and meets the requirements of this project perfectly. It’s also very easy to put together and adapt to the layout of the site.”
