D+H UK worked with M.C.I. Developments to provide a natural smoke ventilation solution for Aura, a residential scheme made up of two new-build blocks on Hartington Road.

The apartments, managed by Southway Housing, are located in the centre of Altrincham. The two and three storey blocks contain 42 flats between them.

D+H UK supplied and installed chain drive operated AOVs along with the relevant controls for the system.

The CE marked EN 12101-2 certified AOVs are located within three communal staircases and eight corridors across both blocks. They provide 1.0m² and 1.5m² geometric free area respectively.

D+H UK also installed the internal guards on the AOVs, conforming to Approved Document K: Protection from Falling, Collision and Impact.

Example of application in case of fire
A smoke detector within a communal area triggers the control panel. The control panel opens the AOVs on the fire floor to draw the smoke out one way and bring fresh air in the other.

The system is fully automatic to allow safe escape for residents and clear access for firefighters.
