Eastgate Shopping Centre embarked on a green policy back in 2002 with the aim of cutting its landfill contributions and energy use. Since then, Hans Wustefeld, Centre Manager, has installed low and high toilet-flushing systems, sensor-operated taps to reduce water consumption and sensor-operated lights in the washroom also switch on and off automatically to cut energy use. Then his attention turned to hand dryers.

“Our warm air hand dryers were using too much energy – blowing out lots of hot air – and not even working very well. We’d almost given up finding anything better when I read an article in the paper about the Dyson Airblade™ hand dryer.”

After trying the technology, Hans ordered 14 machines for the centre’s washrooms. “Cutting energy use was very important for us. We’ve seen big savings there already. Hygiene is also key. With lots of cafes and eateries in the centre it’s also great that customers can dry their hands using purified air.”

Centre staff have been asking people what they think about the new hand dryers. “They really like them,” says Hans. “Our washrooms are a real talking point – and our cleaning staff are happy too because they’re easier to maintain.”
