Excel London, Royal Docks

Excel London, Royal Docks

A new experience for the Royal Docks
The ambitious, large-scale regeneration of ExceL London is a landmark project, set to transform the public experience of the Royal Docks. As part of this vision, John Robertson Architects (JRA) were tasked with designing the extensive new linear walkways and to create clear, inviting, and functional routes to guide visitors through the new space.

The design approach
The architectural vision called for a strong, linear aesthetic to define the pathways. This required a family of street furniture that could provide visual consistency and harmony. Practicality was just as important as the aesthetic. The team needed a cost-effective, modular approach that could be adapted to different lengths.

A key challenge was the introduction of greenery. The walkways’ construction meant there was no room for in-ground planting, so any solution had to be entirely freestanding without compromising on scale or impact.

A harmonious solution
JRA found a cohesive and intelligent solution within our modular ranges.

For seating, our RailRoad Inline system was the natural choice. Its clever design, based on connectable start, mid, and end modules, is made for creating long, seamless runs of seating. This perfectly matched JRA’s linear vision, offering an inviting and comfortable place for visitors to rest, while its modularity provided a cost-effective alternative to bespoke fabrication. The perfect linear aspect of the range is also soothing to the eye, creating an effortlessly pleasing aesthetic.

To complement the seating and introduce vital greenery, the Fern range of planters was selected. As a robust, freestanding system, Fern solved the project’s primary logistical challenge, allowing JRA to position large-scale planting precisely where it was needed. The planters’ clean, geometric lines sit in perfect harmony with the RailRoad seating, reinforcing the considered, linear feel of the entire space. And in the gorgeous Corten steel finish, the planters deliver colour contrast and that timeless look of permanence.

The result
By pairing these two ranges, JRA has created a public realm that is functional, beautiful, and welcoming. It’s a clear demonstration of how thoughtful, design-led modularity can transform an urban walkway into a restful and orderly realm of wellbeing.
