Fire separation between floors reinstated with FireMaster fire curtains

Fire separation between floors reinstated with FireMaster fire curtains

In April 2018, the Hotel Russell underwent an extensive refurbishment to become The Principal London, a five star hotel, located on Russell Square, Bloomsbury, London.

EPR Architects were the lead designer and Coopers Fire worked with LJJ Contractors on this project. The existing ornate and decorative features of the hotel, meant that the fire curtains needed to integrate with the existing parts of the building that were remaining. This included a four sided, marble clad atrium in one of the main entrance halls, which covers two floors from ground floor to first floor.

There were four fire curtains installed around the first floor of the atrium therefore reinstating fire separation between floors. Fire curtains offering up to 3 hours fire resistance were also installed in the new hotel kitchens, preventing fire from spreading from kitchen areas to the public dining rooms and bar.

As a manufacturer and installer that is fully project managed meant Coopers Fire were able to ensure the final, fitted products satisfied the high quality finish required and integrated with the existing hotel as per the design requirements. Coopers Fire are Independently Third Party Certified for Product Testing and Installation.

Coopers Fire fire curtains are recognised as the modern alternative to firewalls, fire doors and glazing, giving designers the freedom to design modern, open plan spaces without compromising fire safety. They are increasingly specified by designers as a solution for open plan designs. Coopers Fire is a turnkey business, offering the customer a product and service with full provenance. Coopers Fire designs, manufactures, tests, installs and maintains all its fire curtains from their business premises in Havant, Hampshire.

Key benefits include:

• Allows open plan staircase design by offering the required fire separation between floors
• Integrated into ceiling so virtually invisible until deployed
• Side guides were installed behind marble so the fire curtains are virtually invisible
• Compliant to BS 8524-1:2013
• Manufactured by Coopers Fire in the UK under BS EN ISO 9001 and 14001 systems
