Flexicon secures Neasden Rail Depot upgrade

Flexible conduit from Flexicon is protecting safety critical power and data cables for CCTV and public address voice alarms (PAVA) as part of the £240 million upgrade of London Underground’s largest rail depot.

The Neasden rail depot covers 64 acres. Phase one of the site’s upgrade includes the construction of a new train maintenance shed, improved wheel inspection and repair facilities and additional berthing capacity. As a result, the depot can maintain and service the new eight car ‘S’ type trains. Previous trains were four cars long.

Staff safety in this busy depot is a priority and the upgraded CCTV system is a critical part of this. It is used to monitor staff movements on site to avoid any accidents.

For example as part of wheel maintenance, trains have their wheel sets turned without a driver being present. This is monitored remotely by staff in the office, who have an emergency stop button in case someone strays into the path of an oncoming train.

In addition, Third Eye has also upgraded the Public Address Voice Alarm system in the depot to meet the latest standards. This system is connected to the fire alarm system, so that in the event of a fire prerecorded voice alarms are sounded.

Says John James Wright, Project Co-ordinator for Third Eye Installations: “Protecting the power and data cables to these installations is vital for staff safety, they cannot fail. The specification of the flexible conduit system had to meet exacting standards set out by London Underground.”

Third Eye specified LFHU low fire hazard coated galvanised steel system for the installation. It has a high mechanical strength and offers an extra low fire hazard performance. Used with compression fittings it also has an IP rating of IP65 and has been vibration and shock tested to EN 61373 Cat 2.

Concludes Wright: “Flexicon provided us with excellent technical support and advice throughout this project. This allowed us to concentrate on the positioning and commissioning of the equipment to provide the solution, with full confidence that the cabling is protected to ensure ongoing power and data connection.”

Tim Creedon, Sales & Marketing Director for Flexicon added: “Flexicon has a wide variety of flexible conduit systems listed with London Underground that have APR certificate numbers, and this list is growing. We pride ourselves on working closely with specifiers and installers to ensure correct product selection which ultimately supports the supply chain.”
