Conceived by Hettich, FurnSpin throws away the rulebook on cabinet design by revealing or concealing the contents of furniture with a simple 180-degree rotational movement.
“FurnSpin gives a glimpse into the near future of furniture design,” says Hettich UK’s Head of Marketing Jonathan Hunt. “As innovators in the sector, we have introduced the concept to customers to spark the imagination and initiate discussions. We want to explore how FurnSpin can play a part in the future of high-end cabinetry throughout the home.”
Rather than providing access to cabinet space with a traditional opening, FurnSpin turns the furniture inside out. There are no doors or flaps to get in the way and the “now-you-see-it-now-you-don’t” action is not only satisfying to use, but enables the flexible use of space in terms of what’s on show and what’s not. You might want the content of a cocktail cabinet on display when entertaining, for example, but not as the background to a work meeting.
Making FurnSpin a workable reality required perfected kinematics to prevent any collision with furniture edges and to cancel out centrifugal force to ensure that even light objects stay put.
The Interzum award-winning, door-free concept will be demonstrated with prototype models at Hettich UK’s Innovation Centre which opens at the company’s HQ near MediaCity in Salford on October 7.
Established in 1888, Hettich is the biggest German manufacturer of furniture fittings and has been in the UK since 1990, inspiring the British interiors sector with innovative furniture technology made to exacting standards in its German factories. That includes drawer systems, hinges and sliding/folding systems and other distinctive products which bring furniture to life.
