Great Western Hospital, Swindon
Client: Carillion Health
Type of works: installation of Dyson Airblade hand dryers improve hygiene and reduce carbon footprint at hospital.
The Great Western Hospital is a modern district general hospital providing emergency care, surgery, diagnostics, paediatrics, maternity, outpatient and day care services. Opened in 2002, the hospital buildings are designed to offer a first class environment for patients, visitors and staff.
The Swindon and Marlborough NHS Trusts private sector partner, Carillion Health, maintains the hospital buildings. It is responsible for providing a safe, clean environment as well as managing energy consumption. As part of that, upgrading washroom hand drying facilities was a priority. Previously, paper towels had been used, but this had proved a costly and unsustainable solution. There was concern over hygiene risks, cost-efficiency and the amount of waste being sent to landfill.
As the only hand dryer certified by NSF International, the Dyson Airblade was the obvious first choice for hygiene. Keith Garner, Energy Manager, Carillion Health, was also impressed with the environmental and costs benefits the Dyson Airblade hand dryer could deliver. He decided to have 36 units installed throughout the hospitals washrooms.
The decision to equip the hospitals washrooms with Dyson Airblade hand dryers has delivered impressive returns. The hospital projects overall cost savings of £1,145 per unit per annum. It also expects a reduction in waste sent to landfill of 1 tonne per year and a reduction in carbon emissions of 1.3 tonnes per year.
Keith Garner said, We chose the Dyson Airblade because it provides an environmentally-friendly, cost-efficient and hygienic means of drying hands. It has proved to be just that, especially when compared with traditional hand drying methods.
