Guildhall, London

Client: The City of London
Type of works: supply of Kemperol 2K-PUR

The City of London has specified Kemper System’s Kemperol 2K-PUR solvent-free, wet-on-wet waterproofing system for the refurbishment of the historic Guildhall’s west wing.

The roof refurbishment forms part of a wider external facelift for the west wing of the 800-year-old, Grade 1 listed building, which also includes cleaning of the west wing’s exterior stone work. The building, which is still home to the City of London Corporation, offers some of the most prestigious banqueting facilities in the UK and the west wing houses function rooms, meeting rooms and accommodation for high ranking councillors which will all remain fully operational during the works. CRC Group Ltd has been awarded the contract to complete the roof refurbishment in a 10-week programme that will see the company install the Kemperol 2K-PUR membrane onto the existing roof substrate.

Explains Steve Webb from Concept: “The existing roof is concrete with a bituminous felt surface incorporating an aluminium facing and it had started to present a risk of leaks in some areas. One of the key advantages of the Kemperol waterproofing system is that it can be overlaid onto almost any substrate which dramatically reduces the amount of preparatory work involved and therefore minimises the time required on site.”

The project involves installation of the Kemperol 2K-PUR membrane across a 1000m² area of the west wing’s roof, which is very detailed and complex. In addition to architectural features, the roof also has a number of air conditioning service units on it and is in an area of the building close to an exterior courtyard with windows to all sides so any strong-smelling solvent-based systems would cause unpleasant odours within the building.

Comments Michael Coleman from the City of London Corporation: “Minimising disruption to visitors and occupants was a key consideration when planning this refurbishment and by using the Kemperol 2K-PUR system we can ensure that the project is completed as quickly as possible without the risk of any unpleasant fumes whilst gaining a roof that is guaranteed for a service life of 20 years.”
