A blog written by Canal Engineering Ltd

At Canal, we can design and manufacture a range of different bespoke staircases to meet your needs whether it be for a commercial or residential property.

One of the questions we get asked a lot is what is the difference between a helical and spiral staircase?

Both different types do share similar features. Both of them being curved separates them for a traditional staircase and it is a common misinterpretation that any staircase with a curve in is a spiral staircase.

What’s the main difference?
The main difference between the two styles of stairs is to do with the central column, spiral staircases have a central column whereas helical staircases can be more modified in their shape as they don’t need a central column making them a much more popular choice for those wanting a completely bespoke design.

What are the benefits of Helical Staircases?
A Helical staircase in most cases will need more space than a spiral staircase, although this on face value sounds like a negative it does, in fact, mean the staircase becomes more of a feature point of the room and entire property.

In our experience, helical staircases look best in open plan rooms especially entrances as it can give a modern or traditional property a grand opening. They also work great in a commercial setting whether it be a transition to a different shop floor or to a new floor of offices, a helical staircase can add an intriguing feature to impress customers. This is demonstrated in our Hugo Boss project as the helical staircase gives their shop an exclusive feel.

A note about helical staircases is that they are also commonly known as curved staircases. The name helical originates from the staircase have the shape of a helix, which causes the main point of confusion where people believe spiral staircases to be the same.

What are the benefits of Spiral Staircases?
The main benefit of a spiral staircase is that compared to a helical staircase they as a lot more space effective. It is important to note that the more space you save generally will come with a bigger incline for the spiral staircase.

Spiral staircases have a strong aesthetic appeal often making them a popular choice with residential properties. They can also be used as an interior and external staircase. One example of how a spiral staircase is used effectively externally is our Mole Hill project where a spiral staircase was used to allow access from the balcony to the garden while not taking up space of the garden area.

The benefit of both staircases
The main benefit property owners find with both of these styles of staircases is that they often add value to your property. Both look very pleasing aesthetically and Canal’s bespoke elements will allow you to choose from a range of materials and look to ensure they match your vision. Both styles of staircases can add a wow-factor to your property.
