From navigating safe stairs to creating an ambiance, selecting the correct LED Lighting System can seem like it’s not as easy as 1, 2, 3 but Gradus are here to help. With a step-by-step guide on specifying LED stair edgings, Gradus can help you create a complete lighting system that meets all your retail and leisure project needs.

Step 1: Select the right profile.
Select a stair edging that provides a tight fit to the step to ensure the profile doesn’t lift or rock during use. The gauge of the nosing should be finished flush with the surrounding floorcoverings, therefore choose a profile that will ensure a smooth transition whatever the application.

Step 2: Provide the correct level of slip-resistance.
Pick an insert that provides the correct level of slip-resistance. In restaurants, bars & cafes there is often a risk of moisture from spilled drinks so Gradus would recommend using an Xtra-Grip insert which provides a low risk of slip in interior dry or wet conditions. Do you have stairs in the kitchen or food preparation areas? The stairs may need to be frequently cleaned and an Xtra-Grip Plus insert is designed to withstand frequent cleaning. If there are no risks of moisture you can use a standard interior insert, all of which are available in a range of colours.

Step 3: Provide definition in low-light areas.
Step edges should be highlighted and should visually contrast by at least 30 LRV points on both the tread and riser. Gradus have a wide range of insert colours and channel colours, which provide you with the visual contrast you need to create safe stairs, as well as complementing your interior design scheme.

The position of the lighting on the profile is also an important factor as it may be the only way that building users can identify the edge of the step in dark or low-light conditions. If you only want to illuminate the step edge, a profile with the LED facing up or angled up would be best. However, if you want to light up the tread and riser, you will need to select a profile that provides you with the option to have both up and down illumination.

Step 4: Select a type of LED.
Now for the fun part! Choosing the type and colour of lighting! Gradus offers three types of lighting; each provides a different type of illumination.
