Hush-Panel 28 provides a sustainable floor soundproofing solution

Effective soundproofing of separating floors can go hand-in-hand with sustainable building goals by specifying Hush-Panel 28 acoustic flooring panels.

Hush-Panel 28 is widely regarded as the go-to solution where a floating floor is integrated into the separating floor design with the aim of reducing sound transmission. What is also notable about the product, however, is that the materials used in its manufacture have important sustainability characteristics.

Designed to be used as a structural or overlay board, Hush-Panel 28 is formed by bonding an 18mm High Density P5 Moisture Resistant tongued and grooved chipboard to a 10mm Hushfelt resilient layer. It is suitable for use in new build, material change of use and refurbishment projects to achieve acoustic floor designs that comply with the requirements of all UK Building Regulations, including Approved Document E in England & Wales.

The chipboard used in its manufacture is certified by the internationally recognised Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). Being an FSC certified product means it meets the ‘gold standard’ of ethical production, using only wood that is harvested from forests that are responsibly managed, socially beneficial, environmentally conscious, and economically viable.

In addition, the Hushfelt resilient layer has its own sustainable sourcing and waste reduction benefits by using an abundant post-consumer material that is often needlessly sent to landfill. Hushfelt is manufactured from recycled fibres, usually from carpets, to a special formulation which is needle punched to make it ideal for long term use in acoustic floor situations.

Once the Hush-Panel 28 is installed, this provides an environmentally friendly rot proof polypropylene layer of 10mm nominal thickness. And it is safe from an installer perspective too, being pleasant to handle and requiring no precautions against skin or respiratory irritation.

Rob Crampton, MD of Hush Acoustics said: “Hush-Panel 28 has been at the forefront of the market now for more than 22 years, but given the increased focus on sustainability in construction today it is a product that represents a win-win for architects and developers.

“It is ideal for use in domestic and non-domestic building designs that seek to give occupiers excellent levels of acoustic comfort, which is of course a crucial dimension for delivering a sustainable building that will be popular with owners and users both now and long in to the future. But equally important, Hush-Panel 28 can be specified with the knowledge that it will also fit the environmental sustainability objectives of the building design.”

Hush-Panel 28 can be laid over concrete, existing timber floors or directly over joists up to 450mm centres. Each board is sized 2400mm x 600mm x 28mm to provide a 26mm FFL over a floor deck and an FFL over timber joists of 36mm as a Hush-10 Joist Strip is used in these applications for additional sound reduction.

It is also an ideal flooring panel for ceramic tiling in conjunction with Permalayer and a peel clean version is available to enable builders and developers to achieve spotless handovers.
