Subcontractor: MG Ceilings and Linings Ltd
Type of works: supply and installation of Knauf MPFinish spray plaster.
Latest technology in plastering helped prepare IKEAs new UK store in time for its Spring 2009 opening. Using Knauf Drywalls MPFinish spray plaster for a fast, high-quality finish, subcontractor MG Ceilings and Linings Ltd skimmed 17,500m2 of plasterboard walls in the showroom and restaurant of the new store at West Quay, Southampton. MPFinish is part of Knauf Drywalls range of machine-applied plasters, which provide significant advantages over traditional plastering techniques.
With exposed plasterboard walls up to 7m high in the walk-through showroom and restaurant, the new 35,000m2 IKEA store, its 18th and third largest in the UK, presented a sizeable plastering challenge. Fast and easy-to-apply MPFinish provided a perfect solution, with each of the two MG plastering teams regularly achieving up to 300m2 of quality work per day.
Spencer Davies, Senior Contracts Manager at MG Ceilings and Linings says: We had previously used MPFinish on a project in Liverpool everyone was most impressed with the superb finish. MPFinish is so fast that one man spraying can support four or five plasterers following behind with spatulas. There is also very little mess, compared to traditional plasters.
MG Ceilings and Linings is taking the same technology to its next high-profile contract, a new 8,800m2 office complex, due to open in Summer 2010. Founded in 1985, Bootle-based MG Ceilings and Linings is a prominent plastering and dry lining contractor in the North West, now also with an increasingly active division in the South. Sister company MG Barkers was responsible for office partitions, closed ceilings, decoration, flooring, ceramic tiling, general joinery packages and WC cubicles in the Southampton store.
Bob Stark, Knauf Drywall Marketing Manager, says MPFinish is designed for high quality and high productivity. The spray nozzle delivers enough material to plaster one square metre every 11 seconds, making this one of the worlds fastest quality plaster solutions. It can be applied to walls and ceilings with equal ease, and by mounting the spray nozzle and spatulas on poles, teams can usually work from a standing position on the floor.
MPFinish complements MP75, Knauf Drywalls time-saving machine applied one coat plaster (up to three times faster than traditional two coat plasters) for use on masonry walls. Both these products are supplied dry in 25kg bags and are automatically mixed with water to the desired consistency in the machine. Newly added to the machine-applied plaster range are Knauf Plano and Knauf Deco, which are supplied ready mixed for spray application. These economical and fast drying plasters can be used on a variety of surfaces in new and refurbishment projects.
Knauf Drywall manufactures a full range of plasters, plasterboards, insulating laminates, dry flooring, drywall accessories, and metal sections for domestic, commercial and public sector applications. Knauf Drywall pioneered carbon neutral plasterboard in the UK with Knauf Futurepanel. Knauf Drywall also actively promotes recycling from building sites and has a zero waste policy in its energy efficient factories at Sittingbourne in Kent and Immingham on Humberside.
