For a contemporary self-build eco-house, constructed in the grounds of a listed building, Catnic’s SSR2 Standing Seam Roofing and Cladding system has provided a sustainable, aesthetically complementary and high performance roofing solution for the harsh Scottish coastal location.
The detached, three-bedroom house has been designed with Passivhaus principles in mind to meet the best environmental standards for minimum heating use and high thermal performance - achieving a SAP* level for energy efficiency of 100 out of 100.
A contemporary juxtaposition to its traditional neighbour, the new build echoes the existing building’s roofline featuring a combination of pitched and flat roofing with three varying roof heights.
The rest of the house comprises a single and two-storey format, which covers a 140sqm footprint and features a white render finish with large outfacing glazed aluminium windows, allowing its occupants to soak up the view.
Finished in an Anthracite shade, 66m2 of the Catnic SSR2 Standing Seam Roofing and Cladding system has been installed to a joisted roof. Pitched to create a double height open plan living area, it provides a striking visual contrast to the flat roof EPDM aluminium coated finish used elsewhere.
Supporting the house’s eco design, photovoltaic (PV) roof panels have also been installed. The SSR2 system accommodates this requirement easily with the use of a simple fixing bracket that clamps on to the standing seam upstand. This allows the PV panels to be installed without needing to put holes through the roof and keeps the installation process simple.
The SSR2 system is manufactured to meet all relevant legislation, including load bearing for wind speed in accordance with EN 1991-4 and weather tightness in accordance with BS 5534 Parts 1 and 2. In addition, helping to meet requirements for sustainable building solutions – SSR2 is BRE Green Guide Rated ‘A’ and at end of life – the panels are 100% recyclable.
