Introducing C-Probe Systems: structural resilience through smart, low carbon solutions

Over the course of the last year, a range of UK Government publications and policies have placed a large focus on how we can achieve NetZero, whilst also investing in technology and methods that make our built environment more resilient and sustainable.

The key to smarter and greener construction is the combined use of innovation and low carbon materials. Therefore, it seems only right to introduce a new addition to Barbour Product Search that fills all of these criteria: C-Probe Systems Ltd.

C-Probe Systems manufactures smart, low-carbon corrosion protection and monitoring products. These whole life systems use the technique of cathodic protection to protect a range of existing masonry and concrete structures, whether it be heritage buildings, marine jetties or bridges.

The technology is based on LoCem®, which is the base formulation for a family of low carbon alkali-activated cementitious materials (AACMs), blended from industrial waste by-products with no heat to provide repair mortars, anode mortars and concretes that offer over 80% CO2e reduction compared to Portland cements.

The combination of the low carbon credentials and retention of embodied carbon in existing structures aligns with vital Environmental Social Governance (ESG) policy, whilst contributing to the principles of a Circular Economy.

When used as an anode mortar, LoCem® helps create effective corrosion protection products for a diverse range of uses. C-Probe has multiple products that fit within the restoration market, repairing, and strengthening structures for the long-term.

For example, their +point® anode operates as an Impressed Current Cathodic Protection (ICCP) repointing mortar for heritage stone and brick buildings which have fallen victim to Regent Street Disease (severe structural corrosion of the internal steel frame).

Alongside that, +chase® is another ICCP anode which is used for restoring reinforced concrete structures, most commonly multi story carparks, that degrade from chloride salts. View the product range in-depth here.

C-Probe is continually investing in research and development to further expand their product offering and is working on innovations that also fit within the New-Build market, helping to protect and monitor structures from the moment they are built.

All anodes are integrated with C-Probe’s embeddable corrosion monitoring & open network control systems (Achilles Suite of Structural Healthcare Systems). These are managed online offering whole-life performance data and tracking using the data server (AiMS). This cuts the costs of routine maintenance and also stops deferring it. The clear transparency into the structure’s health and functionality protects the building’s value, aesthetic and ultimately, human life.

Graeme Jones, CEO of C-Probe, adds: "We have calculated that at full capacity and applied to the objective of preserving embodied carbon with sustainable corrosion protection, our contribution as a business to Net Zero will be over 10gigatonnes of CO2e reduction by 2050.

"Couple this to the positive impact of repurposing waste without added energy from ambient blending and the reduced use of water in the mix design of AACMs, C-Probe is proud of the potential to significantly impact climate change with sustainably resilient structures. Cleantech meets Infratech and Proptech with online control and data to prove performance for whole life."
