When it was completed, Islywn High School in Oakdale, near Caerphilly, was named the Best Educational Building In Wales at the Local Authority Building Control (LABC) Excellence Awards.

Designed by AHR architects and constructed by Willmott Dixon, it was a £22.6m project funded by Wales’s 21st Century Schools programme.

AluK’s commercial team worked with AHR on the specification for all the aluminium windows, doors and curtain walling for the Islywn High School, in line with the requirement for 21st Century Schools to be ‘inspirational and sustainable’ spaces.

The aim was to maximise light into the building and ensure, with the use of 100% recyclable aluminium, that the building would score well in terms of environmental impact and thermal efficiency.

The finished building features AluK SL52 capped curtain walling on the main façade and at the entrance combined with our thermally broken GT55 heavy duty commercial doors. The windows throughout are in our tested, tried and trusted 58BW window system and all the frames are painted in a Qualicoat marine grade, powder coated mid grey finish.

The three storey Islwyn School sits on the site of the former Oakdale Colliery and replaced two previous secondary schools in the area– Oakdale and Pontllanfraith. It now accommodates 900 mainstream pupils, and has an additional learning needs unit for a further 50 pupils.
