Kebony unveils its latest UK flooring project at the new Hackney Picturehouse

Global Cleantech 100 company, Kebony is delighted to unveil its latest UK project, the new Hackney Picturehouse.

Architects Fletcher Priest chose Kebony’s award-winning sustainable alternative to tropical hardwood and toxic treated wood for the flooring of the Hackney Attic – the penthouse bar and events venue of this new forward-thinking cinema.

Working together with the team at the Picturehouse, they used some 90m of Kebony Southern Yellow Pine flooring, not only making a concerted environmental choice but one based on practicality and cost-effectiveness. Kebony’s durability, resistance to wear, longevity and easy maintenance make its flooring product the perfect choice for a venue which will no doubt become a busy hub of the community. With plans afoot for tea dances, live gigs, workshops, screenings and quizzes, Kebony’s hard-wearing flooring was chosen for its ability to withstand high footfall and heavy use.

Above and beyond this, the flooring also looks beautiful and fits perfectly with the architectural and visual approach for the Hackney Attic. Kebony is an exciting and innovative addition to the property which opened its doors to the public on Friday 28 October.

Kebony was thrilled to work alongside Brooks Brothers in association with Reeve Flooring as a UK distributor of its pioneering flooring product and the supplier of material for this project.

Commenting on this project, Tom De Winton, Managing Director of Reeve Flooring says: “Kebony is a unique product and perfect for this type of project. Kebony’s hard wearing properties make it stiletto proof!”

Lyn Goleby, Managing Director at Picturehouse Cinemas adds: “Much of our focus in the project was upon making changes to ensure that a large and challenging building was fitted out for a long-term sustainable future. The Kebony we have used on the top floor has been hugely admired and gives the space a character that has fulfilled our design ambitions whilst not breaking the budget.”

Jan Terje Nielsen, Director of Marketing for Kebony comments: “We are delighted that Fletcher Priest and the team at the Hackney Picturehouse chose Kebony for this exciting new project. Our flooring product is not only hard-wearing and practical but fits perfectly with the aesthetic of its scenic penthouse location.”

Both in the UK and internationally, architects, contractors and developers alike are increasingly turning to high quality, durable and environmentally-friendly products such as Kebony. Kebony offers a revolutionary wood product that can be used not only for flooring but also decking, cladding, roofing, windows, indoor and outdoor furniture, yacht decking and other construction materials.

Kebony has been recognised for its green credentials being named as one of the world’s most promising clean technology companies in the Global Cleantech 100 both in 2010 and 2011. This Norwegian wood company also received Deloitte’s ‘Fast 50 Award’, was cited as one of the top 50 companies that could change our world in 2010 alongside being a CNBC top 25 creative European Company. Kebony has also received the Nordic region’s eco-label, the Swan, the Glass Bear for sustainable consumption and production and the Norwegian Blue Ocean Award. Environmental studies also demonstrate that Kebony maple has a substantially lower carbon footprint than unsustainable logged Burmese teak.
