Kee Klamp® fittings help create a safer working environment on new highways project

Safety guardrailing structures created using Kee Klamp® fittings from Kee Safety Ltd have been installed in several locations on the new A2/A282 highway project as part of the £120 million Dartford Improvement Scheme in Kent.

With completion expected in mid-2008, the Dartford Improvement Scheme is designed to reduce congestion and improve journey time reliability on the A2/A282 trunk roads. It includes new roads to link the northbound A282 and the eastbound A2, new lanes on the A2 westbound for traffic joining the M25 going south, and a fourth lane in each direction on the A2 between the M25 and Bean junction. As part of the scheme, project contractor Costains has selected Kee Klamp® components to help assemble new safety guardrailing beside the roads.

The new guardrailing structures have been installed on concrete capping beams running along the top of sheet pole retaining walls, and on concrete headwalls for drainage outlets into balancing ponds. This will ensure protection for road maintenance teams accessing these areas, helping to prevent falls from height. The new structures will equally afford safety to motorists whose cars may have broken down on these parts of the road. Selected after a competitive tender, Kee Safety’s components were selected because they provide a quick and easy to install which is capable of adapting to different circumstances.

Kee Klamp® components are installed using a standard hex key with each fitting incorporating an integral set screw to lock the respective fitting safely and securely onto the tube. Not only does this method create a strong, stable and safe guardrailing structure, but it also eliminates the need for time-consuming welding or specialist skills. The installation is quick and easy as only the hex key and tube cutters are used which creates a strong, rigid structure. All fittings are galvanised and available to suit eight different sizes of tube. With a combination of protection coats applied to the components, they will achieve a longer life and a better corrosion resistance.
