Kee Systems implements safety fittings at Southbank’s Temporary Theatre

London-based Kee Systems has recently teamed up with Rise Contracts Ltd to supply and install Kee Klamp® and Kee Access® fittings at a temporary theatre in the Capital, to provide safe access for those visiting the venue.

The Shed, which was opened in April 2013 and is due to close in February 2014, was designed by Haworth Tompkins Ltd. Sited at the front of the National Theatre at Southbank, this innovative theatre will present some of theatre’s most exciting artists in an intimate new performance space on the South Bank. Rise Contracts Ltd, the main contractors for the project, specified powder-coated Kee Klamp® and Kee Access® components for internal handrail systems which were installed throughout the auditorium. Galvanised Kee Klamp® fittings were also used externally to provide safe access for those visiting the theatre.

“The robustness and practicality of the fittings were perfectly suited to the project” said Steve Murphy, Managing Director at Rise Contracts Ltd. “The Kee Systems team made our job much easier by providing advice on which products to use and then creating designs for the project. Time was our biggest pressure throughout construction. Thanks to the design service, and the flexibility of the two products, we were able to complete the project within the specified time frame of 18 weeks.”

“Kee Systems were extremely helpful in the design development of the project” says Shane McCamley, Project Architect. “Any problems that arose whilst we were working on the site were easily worked out and resolved with help from Kee Systems”

Kee Klamp® components are versatile and suitable for use in a variety of areas where tubular structures or barriers are required. The off-the-shelf product range is one of the largest on the market, providing fittings for every possible application. All fittings are available with a combination of protective coatings applied to achieve a longer life and a better corrosion resistance. This is vital for structures in areas which may be prone to a high level of weathering or rusting, and structures which are in difficult places to access and work on.

Kee Klamp® components can be installed using a standard hex key with each fitting incorporating an integral set screw to lock the respective fitting safely and securely onto the tube. Not only does this method create a strong, stable and safe guard rail structure, it also eliminates the need for time-consuming welding or specialist skills.

Kee Access® range of fittings allows construction of handrails compliant with legislation covering disabled access, incorporating a total of nineteen special fittings and supplied with versatility, ease and speed of installation in mind. These fittings are ideal as a retrofit solution, because the range includes an “Add-on” offset fitting to allow a new handrail to be added onto an existing structure of appropriate size. The Kee Access® range can be easily augmented with components from the established Kee Klamp® range to create a complete, cost-effective answer to the requirements of Building Regulations Part M. To satisfy the “not cold to the touch” criteria set out in BS 8300: 2005, these galvanised fittings are available with the additional option of powder coating in all RAL colours.
