Kelhead Path and Tinwald Path, Glasgow

Client: Glasgow Housing Association
Type of works: supplied Swisslab External Wall Insulation

The thermal performance of Swisslab External Wall Insulation (EWI) from Alumasc, has been key in its specification for the upgrade of eight Glasgow multi-storey developments.

Work to the blocks of flats at Kelhead Path and Tinwald Path was implemented by Glasgow Housing Association (GHA) as part of a programme designed to modernise homes, making them warmer and drier. Alumasc have worked closely with GHA over the last 7 years, supplying external wall insulation solutions to 80% of all GHA properties under 8 storeys high. The Swisslab system has provided outstanding energy efficiency results and an attractive overall finish, modernising the original dated façades.

The Kelhead Path and Tinwald Path blocks presented the challenge of “Hard-to-Treat” construction, for which Swisslab is perfectly suited. Its robust finish, coupled with ease of installation, provided a consistent appearance across the uneven wall construction and furthermore, 100% of the residents were able to remain in-situ whilst the installation work took place.

Alumasc Approved Installers Transcast Ltd and Recast Rendering Systems, installed Swisslab EWI on behalf of the Main Contractor Lovell, installing 70mm PIR insulation to the front and rear elevations. The upper floors were finished in Brightstone Cream aggregate on white backing render and Harvest aggregate on cream backing render. To create an attractive traditional finish, Alumasc’s Brick Slips were applied to the ground floors.

The use of Swisslab has resulted in an overall U-value of 0.3w/m² across the project, with major reductions being observed in the carbon emissions generated by the blocks.

Swisslab is the market leading insulated render system for overcladding existing properties. It is extensively used to upgrade social housing in order to meet the Decent Homes Standard and strongly contributes to urban regeneration. It is a BBA approved, fully warranted system with a life expectancy in excess of 30 years.
