London Clinic Cancer Centre, Harley Street

Client: London Clinic Cancer Centre
Architect: Anshen + Allen
Contractor: Shepherd Construction
Type of works: supply of Alumasc’s Harmer SML lightweight cast-iron pipework system.

A high performance cast-iron soil and waste system from Alumasc has been installed at the prestigious new London Clinic Cancer Centre in Harley Street.

Designed by architects Anshen + Allen, the £80 million London Clinic is the most advanced cancer centre in Europe with eight floors dedicated exclusively to cancer care, diagnosis and treatment. Alumasc worked closely alongside the mechanical and electrical contractor SES to provide a fully engineered soil and waste solution for the project. Main contractors were Shepherd Construction and the mechanical engineering consultants were Cundall Johnston and Partners.

Alumasc’s Harmer SML lightweight cast iron pipework system is dry-jointed, Agrément certified and has a proven track record of use above ground. The system fully conforms to BS EN 877 and offers excellent acoustic performance, tested in accordance with BS EN 14366: 2004.

With a comprehensive range of fittings and accessories, Harmer SML is easy to install and provides value for money throughout the building life cycle. Pipes and fittings are simply joined with either ductile or stainless steel rubber lined couplings. The system also includes bracketry for restraining the pipework vertically and horizontally and a wide range of special connectors for linking with other materials.

G&S Mechanical executed a fast and simple installation of Harmer SML at the London Clinic by using the Alumasc Duomat tool which connects to a power drill to simultaneously tighten SML coupling bolts to the required torque. Use of the Harmer Duomat fixing tool can result in labour savings of around 40% compared to manual fixing.

SML continues to be used successfully in market sectors ranging from hospitals, commercial premises, offices, schools, industrial projects to civil engineering works and housing, with full technical support available from Alumasc.
