Mercure Southgate Hotel, Exeter

Type of works: supply and installation of Dartmoor Naturals floor and wall tiles.

The 4 star Mercure Southgate Hotel, Exeter has undergone a £2.6 million upgrade including a new look bar, lounge, reception area and 44 new bedrooms. British Ceramic Tile’s stunning Dartmoor Naturals collection has been used in the bathrooms and main entrance of the hotel to create a sophisticated, stylish and long lasting finish.

The impressive main foyer decor features Stromboli porcelain floor tiles which create an overall coordinated look enhancing the guests experience on arrival. The Stromboli tiles were laid in a standard square grid format however the junction between the carpeted area and tile were defined in a big swirl in order to achieve a more organic appearance.

Specialist hotel interior designer, Oliver Redfern said, “I chose Stromboli porcelain matt tiles in the reception area due to its slip rating and overall toughness. This is a high usage commercial environment where style as well as cost effectiveness was critical.”

The refurbished hotel oozes style with each room decorated in the style of the moment. For the bathrooms, the design concept was to create a luxurious looking bathroom which had a warm but contemporary feel. Longevity in design was of utmost importance, needing to look as good in five years time as it does today.

Two schemes were used in the bedrooms, the first incorporated Dartmoor Naturals Quartz tiles for the walls, Dartmoor Naturals Quartz Marble as the accent detail band and Rockface Black tiles on the floor providing a rustic appearance. The second treatment incorporated Dartmoor Naturals Sandstone on the walls, Slate Mosaic as the accent band and satin-finish Metalli Brown on the floor.

British Ceramic Tile offers the very best of British Design and has its own in house design team. Using locally sourced raw materials and manufacturing at a world class, technologically advanced factory British Ceramic Tile offers its customers quality, value and a wide range of choices, made in Britain.

Reopened in June, the 154 bedroomed hotel is centrally located and provides a great base for exploring Dartmoor and the Devon Coastline. Oliver Redfern said, “I was born in Devon and it’s always good to use a local company on a local project. In this case the location of British Ceramic Tile to Exeter couldn’t have been better!”
