Metalcraft manufactured this extremely complex spiral staircase for Multiplex Construction at their site at 15 Bishopsgate in the City of London.

The 3.0m diameter helical stair rose 5.3m in 27 treads with a mid rest landing. The stair terminated at a shaped top landing to provide an escape route from a fire exit door at roof level. The entire stair and landing were supported on two large circular columns.

The balustrading in its entirety was made of polished stainless steel and the stair structure was manufactured in mild steel and finished galvanised and powder coated.

The stair was located in a back alleyway adjacent to entrances to Marks and Spencers and other high street stores and access had to remain during normal working hours. In view of this, the stair was delivered, transported to the site location and erected during night working. Delivery was also a challenge as road closures had to be organised to facilitate delivery of over 6 tonnes of metalwork.

Metalcraft were also commissioned to provide and fit in place several tonnes of structural steelwork under the staircase to support the columns as there was a basement located under the stair and the concrete slab over was unable to take the load of the staircase.

The staircase is a beautiful piece of architectural metalwork with interesting geometry, shapes and textures.
