Milburn Grange Farm, Lake District

Milburn Grange Farm, Lake District

Client: Milburn Grange Farm
Contractor: Wareings Buildings
Type of works: supply of Cembrit's Cemsix fibre-cement corrugated sheeting, helping to create an above-ground silage store.

Form meets perfect function in a new agricultural building recently constructed on a farm in the Lake District. Featuring Cembrit’s Cemscape - the low sheen version of Cemsix fibre cement corrugated sheeting - the new building blends seamlessly into the rugged landscape thanks to careful choice of construction materials while adding valuable extra storage space for the farm.

Located on Milburn Grange Farm in the village of Knock, the building was constructed by Wareings Buildings, the specialist agricultural building supplier based in Preston. The building is a large silage store designed for long life and despite being over twenty feet tall and close to a road is unobtrusive in appearance. The building adds an above-ground silage store to the farm owned and run by John Wier.

“We decided to go for this large design,” said John Wier, “mainly because we’re not keen on roofless silage pits in Cumbria. The weather can be inclement at times and can make the logistics of operating roofless pits an unpleasant experience. For that reason this design suited us. Furthermore, I’m really pleased with the way the muted finish of the Cemscape corrugated fibre cement sheets has rendered the visual impact of the building – it looks an integral part of the farm and surroundings. Just as importantly, it is corrosion and maintenance free and can get on and do its job without further input from me.”

Cemscape is a standard six inch profile fibre-cement corrugated sheet in a Matt Black finish. It is ideal for single skinned agricultural buildings as the sheets are rust proof, weatherproof and are not affected by destructive fungi, vermin or insects, so will not rot or decay. Cemscape sheet incorporates the standard imperial six inch profile and is strengthened with strategically placed polypropylene reinforcement strips. These are incorporated within the sheet to comply with BS and H&S requirements for site safety and fragility. Ideal for agricultural buildings it is robust and practical and requires no maintenance to preserve its strength. Cemscape also conforms to the necessary fire safety requirements being a Class 0 surfaced material with an EXT.S.AA rating and the sheets meet all drop test requirements.

Cemscape is part of the Cemsix range which is available in a variety of sheet lengths and many attractive pre-coloured options. The range features a full range of corrugated sheet accessories including ridges, vents, bargeboards and flashings to satisfy any roof design. The range has full BBA certification and is made to BS EN 494 and the factory where it is manufactured has BS EN 9001 quality management. A warranty is available on request.
