Moor Street Station, Birmingham

Moor Street Station, Birmingham

Architect: Simons Design
Sector: Railway
Client: Chiltern Railways
Contractor: Hill Street Construction

Located next to the £500 million Bullring, Europe’s largest shopping complex, The Birmingham Alliance, is responsible for the development of Birmingham’s whole East Side, and has transformed the old Grade 2 listed Moor Street Station into an exciting new gateway to the city in partnership with Chiltern Railways.

Built in 1909, the building was to be carefully and sympathetically refurbished in the style of a 1930’s station, with brickwork, colouring, signage, fixtures and fittings chosen to reflect the era. Now complete and open to the public, it is operated by Chiltern Railways.

Aggregate Industries’s EcoPave flag paving in addition to platform copings from Aggregate Industries’s specialist division, have been used to finish off the refurbished station to help restore it to its former glory.

More than 500 platform copings and almost 3,000 m2 of custom made 750x600x50 mm EcoPave flag paving, both in a Black Fleck textured finish, were supplied to Hill Street Construction for installation on the three platforms of the old station and their approaches.

Mark Cockerill, Project Manager, Chiltern Railways said: “Moor Street is one of the most attractive stations in the UK and we have had a very favourable reaction from the public since it reopened. Aggregate Industries was able to deliver a quality product which has helped us to create a pleasant environment for our passengers.”

Product features:

EcoPave flag paving is suited to both new and established landscapes in town centres, pedestrian areas and shopping precincts. EcoPave has the aesthetic appearance and durability of a high-quality paving range. Ecopave is suitable for all pedestrian areas, and areas with vehicular overrun, subject to the correct design procedures being followed*.
The inclusion of secondary aggregates such as china clay stent, blast furnace slag, and cement replacement, makes EcoPave one the most sustainable paving products on the market today. Furthermore the production process has been adapted to use less energy, and fully recycle the water used in the manufacturing of the product.
Platform copings are available in a range of sizes and colours. Bespoke copings can be made to order (subject to economic production quantities). We are an approved supplier to the rail industry.
