Type of works: supply of 600sq/m Blackdown green roof system for two separate areas of the centre.
Moorgate Crofts Business Centre is an innovative business incubation centre developed by Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council. The state-of-the art building benefits from environmentally economic technologies such as geothermal heating and cooling, recycled materials and a 600sq/m green roof from Alumasc.
Alumasc has supplied complete systems for two separate areas of the centre. The high-level roof features a sedum substrate, while the lower roof garden comprises a semi-intensive, bio-diverse system with paving to all four sides.
RMBC chose Alumasc because of its high-quality products, system benefits and the life expectancy of its green roof systems.
The flexibility of the system and technical expertise available from Alumasc enabled the designers to overcome a number of challenges on the building. Alumasc FS75 drainage board was incorporated into the build-up of the steeply sloping sedum roof to prevent slippage of the substrate. Sedum mats were also used to prevent high winds from eroding the plants and substrate.
At lower level, the semi-intensive, bio-diverse roof garden was based on a Floradrain 40 drainage board to allow drainage to continue underneath the stone paving. The paving was bedded in Blackdownlit crushed brick to ensure the area was pervious to water and reduce the possibility of water build-up at the low threshold details. An Alumasc Derbigum anti-root system provided an efficient, durable waterproofing system that met all the technical demands of the application.
All the plant types were selected by RMBC landscape division and the roofs were installed by M & J Roofing for the main contractor Hall Construction. Widely used on commercial and public projects throughout the UK and Europe, Alumasc green roofs also offer many benefits to the local authority market. Alumasc has been providing green roof technology for 15 years through Blackdown systems. Its products are designed to encourage biodiversity, replace lost landscape, reduce rainwater water run-off and provide a valuable educational and recreational resource.
