An elegant, traditional style rebuild has benefited from not one but two styles of fenestration systems, manufactured by timber window specialists Mumford & Wood Ltd. Bespoke products from the Conservation and Contemporary ranges include traditional sliding sashes, casements, doors with Georgian glazing bars, special shape triangular windows, and modern sliding, folding doors.
The front facade of this substantial 100-year old property is the only part of the original building that remains today. Being located in a picturesque town in the Home Counties, where old and modern architecture sit comfortably together, and where a village atmosphere still prevails the owners felt it important to retain the traditional appearance of the property. A contemporary, open-plan and spacious interior overcomes the warren of small rooms that once provided difficult access and dark spaces.
There was absolutely nothing we liked about the original building not a fireplace, cornice, architrave except for the front facade but even so the small inconspicuous casements were miserable, says homeowner and full time Project Manager, Mrs Conway. Our developer, who specialises in rebuilds and renovation projects, suggested it would be more efficient to take the roof off, keep the original front wall and gut the rest of it, which we did. It has taken one and a half years but we now have a home that provides the style and space we like to live in with all the high performance criteria of modern timber windows and doors and technical building materials.
Buckinghamshire-based prestigious local developer delivered this design and build project and recommended Mumford & Wood windows and doors, their brand of choice for quality and technical support. Where we can we would prefer to work with the Mumford & Wood brand because we know they will provide the best job every time. A huge part of our work is in refurbishment so it is essential to have a bespoke service that is versatile enough to cope with unique projects, says Richard Minshell. Mumford & Wood redrew the front fa c ade enlarging the window openings to accommodate sliding sash windows which have greatly influenced the dramatic new facelift.
Mrs Conway continues: Our home is bright and open with lots of natural light which we love, and the folding sliding doors to the games room are just fantastic. They allow our lovely south facing garden to come right inside our home. The timber entrance door, also made by Mumford & Wood, has been created with historical accuracy.
All products by Mumford & Wood are made from laminated engineered larch for stability, durability and a naturally long life. Double-glazed, factory-finished, thermally-efficient windows are BFRC energy rated, from C to A depending on specification, and supplied to site with three coats of environmentally-friendly, microporous water-based paint as standard.
