Project
The Press is a modern conversion in the business district of Manchester. The Grade II listed building is a former Co-Operative Printing Society printing mill.
The Press, now converted into a single residential development, comprises of 66 one, two, and three bed apartments and townhouses over eight storeys.
System
D+H UK worked with Aberla and Domis Construction to supply and install natural and mechanical smoke ventilation systems at The Press.
The fire strategy by Design Fire Consultants determined the complex operation of the multiple zones that form the smoke control and fire alarm systems.
This ensures that the means of escape (MOE) are kept clear of a smoke by a combination of mechanical extract and natural smoke ventilation systems. This also allows safe access into the building for fire fighters.
Ventilated areas include the main “street” or atrium, protected corridors, lobbies and staircases.
Acoustic surveys were carried out to ensure the noise levels (with fans on full extract) met the LABC guidelines as this is a densely populated area.
