Parcelforce Worldwide, Coventry

Client: Parcelforce Worldwide
Type of works: design, manufacture and install conveyor and sortation plant support structures.

Mezzanine was contracted to design, manufacture and install conveyor and sortation plant support structures at this major new international hub of Parcelforce Worldwide, the parcels division of the British Post Office.

Mezzanine's 3.7 metre high structures include two main induction conveyor support mezzanines, each approximately 40m x 25m, designed to accommodate the return loops of the sorter conveyors. Linking them, an L-shaped structure, almost 140 metres long, supports the sorter. Access walkways, running the whole length of the structure allow ease of inspection and maintenance of the sortation plant. Maintenance platforms were also constructed.

A number of lower level platforms, 1.5 metre high, designed as work stations for conveyor fed incoming parcels, also formed part of Mezzanine's contract.

As usual with such projects, Mezzanine's brief included the supply and installation of a number of 'step-overs'. These small bridges ensure that personnel do not have to climb over conveyors, risking their own safety and damage to goods and plant. In a further consideration of safety Mezzanine in-filled the handrailing with mesh panels designed to restrict the risk of goods accidentally falling to ground level.
