Megaman lamps have been used to significantly reduce energy consumption, whist complying with ISO guidelines, at Plymouth Pavilions, a multi-purpose leisure facility in the South West of England. As one of the leading entertainment venues in the area, Plymouth Pavilions offers entertainment, concert, leisure and conference facilities.

The introduction of a strict environmental policy at the complex as part of the ISO:140001 objectives coincided with the existing lighting coming to the end of it's life. With this in mind, management at the facility contacted local electrical wholesaler Edmundsons and asked them to carry out a survey to see what energy saving could be achieved. With their advice, the simple change to lamps from Megaman's energy saving range, without the need to change the existing fittings, showed that Plymouth Pavilions should see a return on investment within 9 months of fitting.

The ice rink was the first area to be converted to Megaman's 320W Clusterlite. The Clusterlite is an innovative, high-wattage lighting solution that provides a real alternative to HID lamps. Combining all the virtues of compact fluorescent technology, excellent lumen maintenance after 15,000 hours of operation, superb colour rendering and uniformity and excellent lumen output, Clusterlite's performance exceeds that of the majority of HID lamps. Available in two options, Clusterlite is supplied with an integrated power supply or, alternatively, an ultra lightweight external power supply which allows easy fitting into virtually any light fitting.

The company's 15W PAR30 reflector lamps were also used in the perimeter area of the rink. With the temperature range within the rink area between 8 and 10°c, PAR30 lamps were the ideal choice for this application as they produce less heat and are the perfect replacement for incandescent reflectors. Following the success of the initial re-lamping, other areas within Plymouth Pavilions are now part of the changeover programme.

Darrell Lunt, Building Services Manager at Plymouth commented: "We are very happy with the installation; as we have to convert zone by zone we have already changed the lobby and toilet lighting and the next area to be changed will be the swimming pool area. With regards to the savings we have achieved, we have already calculated that in one month alone we managed to cut our energy consumption by 108,000kW."
