Reno Mattress Plus
Traditional river bank protection made with loose stones (rip-rap) requires a thick layer of material to be effective. This is because the rip-rap stones are not confined and the layers cannot be accurately placed, resulting in higher stone consumption with an increased environmental burden.

Since the first mattresses were used by Maccaferri over 100 years ago, traditional Reno Mattresses have long provided an excellent alternative to rip-rap; the confining effect of the mesh enables far fewer stones to be used whilst providing the same level of protection as rip-rap.

Maccaferri has now taken the Reno Mattress a step further with the new Reno Mattress Plus.

This is the result of extensive testing at Colorado State University, USA. A deeper understanding of the performance of the mattress enabled us to refine the design of the original Reno Mattress and incorporate features to make it perform even better.

This further reduces the thickness of rocks needed to protect the river bank, leading to environmental benefits due to less quarrying and transportation of rock. Reno Mattress Plus is also easier to install, even in steep slope conditions, thanks to its robust double diaphragms which speed up the unit assembly process.

Reno Mattress Plus is over 70% more efficient than rip-rap in applications with high hydraulic shear stress.

This enables more cost-effective designs, lower quarried stone usage/transportation, lower carbon footprint and quicker installation in comparison to equivalent and alternative (traditional) systems.

Establishment of habitat
Finally, Reno Mattress Plus creates a natural habitat for living species, enhancing biodiversity as the interstitial spaces of the mattress offer a habitat for species that live in the transition zone between water and land.

Reno Mattress Plus has an EPD (Environmental Product Declaration) Certificate providing transparent data on the environmental footprint associated with their manufacture.
