Roman Park, Herefordshire

A historic park has benefited from a £28,000 investment to support the health and wellbeing of residents for years to come.

Roman Park, which dates back to the 1st-4th Century, now features outdoor fitness zones for children and adults.

The development is part of a wider improvement plan for the recreation area and archaeology work had to be carried out before the installation could go ahead.

Although no historical finds were made, it paved the way for the two outdoor gyms which are aimed at boosting health and wellbeing among residents and visitors following the pandemic.

Credenhill Parish Council led the project boosted by funding from Herefordshire Community Foundation.

The adults area can accommodate up to 17 users at a time and includes a mix of equipment to provide both strength training and a cardiovascular workout.

The Double Health Walker and Double Slalom Skier are popular pieces which get the joints moving and the heart rate up.

A Horse Rider, Rower and Arm & Pedal Bicycle offer a full-body workout while the Combi Pull Down Challenger & Power Push is a gentle introduction to upper body training, following the same movements as the chest press and lat pull down offered in a traditional indoor gym.

The Parallel Rails and Double Pull Up can accommodate more advanced movements such as dips and leg raises.

The Sky Stepper, our version of an outdoor cross trainer, and the Double Sit Up Bench also feature at Roman Park alongside the Double Squat Push.

In the children’s fitness zone, an Activ8 Multi Gym takes centre stage.

With stations for eight users, it incorporates a Children’s Double Health Walker, Double Slalom Skier, Double Waist Twister, Arm Bicycle and Tai Chi Discs.

An additional Children’s Double Slalom Skier, a Children’s Arm & Pedal Bicycle, and a Children’s Sky Stepper have also been included in the outdoor gym to create an inclusive experience for users of all abilities.

The configuration of the Activ8 Multi Gym has been designed to provide social benefits to exercising outdoors, bringing children together to make friends through a shared interest.

Two outdoor table tennis tables complete the project for the extra fun factor.

The outdoor fitness zones were created on a grassed area, with Sunshine Gym Grass Mats included in the installation to reduce wear and tear on the ground and to protect users from a build-up of mud around the areas where they get on and off the equipment.
