Roundhouse, Derby College

Roundhouse, Derby College

Type of works: design and manufacture of Leaderflush Shapland's Longden solid timber doorsets.

The new Roundhouse campus is the stunning centrepiece of Derby College providing 18,000m2 of learning and teaching space. Located next to Derby Railway Station, the Roundhouse has been developed as part of an imaginative £43 million regeneration scheme centred on buildings which were used for steam engine repairs for more than 120 years inscribing Derby into the annals of railway history.

The detailed restoration – a demonstration project for Constructing Excellence –has transformed and revitalised the once-derelict, Grade II-listed Roundhouse and developed additional impressive new buildings which perfectly complement the character of the original premises.

Leaderflush Shapland, together with its brands Longden, Fitzpatrick and Multisecure, boasts a diverse product portfolio and as such was the perfect choice for both the interior and the exterior performance doorsets creating a perfect balance between the old and the new.

204 Interior doorsets were specified from Leaderflush Shapland’s Designer range, meeting performance characteristics for fire resistance of 30 and 60 minutes integrity and sound reduction of 32RwdB. The Designer range of flush doorsets allows specifiers complete design freedom with numerous wood veneer, PVC, paint and metal finishes to choose from. Maber Associates carefully selected a combination of veneer faced doorsets and primed doorsets for on-site painting using vibrant colours.

Able to create, adapt and support design concepts to suit any requirement or environment, Longden was able to manufacture the unique external doorsets required to comply and meet the requirements of its Grade II – listed status, including performance characteristics for 30 minutes fire resistance. The solid timber exterior doorsets specified included a uniquely designed framed ledged and braced boarded doorset with over panel as well as vertical boarded doorsets all constructed using the durable hardwood, Iroko.

Both Leaderflush Shapland and Longden worked with project architects, Maber Associates, and main contractor, Bowmer & Kirkland, to ensure that work complied with the requirements of its Grade II-listed status and was sympathetic to the historic design.

The Roundhouse has been listed by English Heritage, grouping it with other important buildings such as Battersea Power Station and the Theatre Royal in Bath. As well as being Derby College’s flagship site, it will be a visitor centre and social hub where people can learn about the city’s history.

Leaderflush Shapland, the UK’s leading performance doorset manufacturer, together with brands such as Longden, has extensive knowledge and experience in the education and renovation sectors with innovative products suitable for almost any application.
