SageGlass allows restaurant guests to enjoy uninterrupted views

Hostellerie am Schwarzsee is located on the banks of the Black Lake on a sunny plateau at an altitude of 1040 metres above sea level. It offers a splendid view of the Prealps, yet the restaurant’s guests were frequently disturbed by strong sunlight that reflected off the lake or the snow, and its resulting heat. Consequently, the curtains often had to remain closed, hiding the beautiful view.

Mr. Roodbeen, the co-owner of Hostellerie am Schwarzsee, wished to renovate the façade of the dining room to allow guests to benefit from the view at all times, without compromising on their thermal and visual comfort.

As part of the renovation, he also wished to add an additional level to provide guests with conference rooms and function space, which must offer the same level of comfort as the dining room.

SageGlass proved to be the ideal solution to fulfill this criteria. The product of 25 years of research and development, SageGlass dynamic glazing makes interior spaces much more comfortable for occupants. It is a durable and beautiful solution for new or retrofitted facades, designed to maximise outdoor views.

At the Hostellerie am Schwarzsee, SageGlass protects guests from heat and glare, optimises the quantity of natural light entering the building, and preserves the breathtaking view of the Black Lake and the Prealps beyond.

The restaurant is fitted with SageGlass LightZone™ technology, which allows for three individual tint zones within a single pane of glass – providing better colour rendering and optimal solar control.

SageGlass tints to various levels by adapting to the outside conditions automatically or integrating with a building management system. The tint can also be manually controlled via a wall panel or Smartphone app, if, for example, people using the new conference rooms wish to darken the glass to improve the visual quality of a video projection.

The co-owner, Mr. Roodben, has already seen an increase in the number of guests at his restaurant. Hostellerie am Schwarzsee now offers a magnificent view – no longer obscured by shades – at any time of day. To dine while gazing onto a beautiful landscape does not have to come at the cost of visual or thermal discomfort. To be sure, the building will also experience long-term energy savings by optimising heat gain.
