Aggregate Industrieswas able to supply a sophisticated SUDs system meeting numerous requirements
In order to provide a sporting opportunity for all, the car park and roof drainage system at the new Salford Sports Village had to be able to withstand the full force of the British weather. Salford City Councils sustainable development policy, meant a Aggregate Industries Sustainable Drainage System was ideal to meet the project criteria.
Salford City Council required a sustainable drainage solution that would not only deal with the rain falling on the roof and hard landscaped areas of the Sports Village site but that could also accommodate any rain fall 'issues' arising from flood defences being built locally.
Moreover the system needed to be able to deal with the storm run off from a 'once in a hundred year' rainfall event as well as the high water table issues connected to the sandy and clay soils in the area.
The answer was to lay a sub base structure underneath the hard landscaped areas of the site made from Permavoid interlocking boxes. 4257 units provided a massive volume to surface area ratio to allow rain water to drain from the surface. At 150 mm in depth, Permavoid means that minimum excavation is required and that it is ideally suited to car park drainage systems. A geotextile fleece covering protects the system against ingress of silts and hydrocarbons and the additional of Aggregate Industries Permachannel guarded against petrol and oil contamination.
Mark Boardman, Project Engineer, Urban Vision said: One of the considerations during the design was the incorporation and use of a sustainable drainage system within the car park area. As this was something that the engineering design section had not undertaken before, Aggregate Industries were contacted with a view to assisting with the specification of materials and designing a sustainable drainage system.
Aggregate Industries Permavoid is a high strength sub-base replacement system that locks together to form a raft below the pavement structure. It can be used either below a permeable surface such as Infilta blocks or Drainasphalt. An impermeable surface in conjunction with Permakerb and Permachannel systems can also be used.
