Sapphire Balustrades smooths the way to completion of landmark development

Sapphire Balustrades’ through-the-project service contributed to the success of a substantial balustrade project for Botanic House, a new landmark commercial development in Cambridge.

Sapphire manufactured bespoke balustrades based on its Onyx stainless steel system for core stairwells in the seven-storey office building. Sapphire’s end-to-end support, from design and manufacture through to installation, helped keep the multi-million pound construction project on schedule, says the Project Manager for main contractor, Morgan Sindall. He comments: “Having reliable supply partners like Sapphire Balustrades is critical to achieving on-time completion, particularly on large commercial contracts like Botanic House. Sapphire’s comprehensive service package, including a detailed site survey, ensured the balustrade installation ran smoothly with no snagging issues to delay the site programme.”

Built by Morgan Sindall for Pace Developments, the distinctive lens-shaped Botanic House, so called because it enjoys stunning views of Cambridge University’s Botanic Garden, offers around 4,000 sq m of high quality office accommodation close to the city centre. Constructed around a concrete frame the building features full height glazing on the north elevation, creating a striking visual effect on the Cambridge skyline.

The contemporary lines of the new building’s exterior are continued inside Botanic House. Sapphire’s versatile Onyx range, which offers design elements that can be mixed and matched, provided a smart solution for balustrades to the building’s two main stairways and landings. Onyx 50mm tubular balusters (uprights) in satin polished stainless steel were combined with a 50mm European Oak hardwood handrail with a clear lacquered finish from Sapphire’s Natura range. Horizontal midrails, manufactured to match the balusters, were selected from a choice of infill options to complete the balustrades. As well as satisfying the aesthetic specification, stairway balustrades for Botanic House were designed by Sapphire to meet functional and legislative requirements, ensuring a solution that is safe, fit for purpose, and will retain its good looks with minimal maintenance.

Summing up, Morgan Sindall’s Project Manager, says: “We received excellent feedback from our client about Sapphire’s products and service for Botanic House and I would have no hesitation in working with Sapphire again or recommending them to others.”

As well as having one of the most comprehensive product ranges available, Sapphire Balustrades prides itself on providing concept to completion assistance to architects, developers, and building professionals.
