Self-build, Bothwell Castle, South Lanarkshire

Type of works: Sandtoft Cassius clay roof tile used for roof in self-build project.

Sandtoft’s Cassius clay roof tile in Antique Slate has been used to create a detached, luxury house, located close to Bothwell Castle in South Lanarkshire.

Mark Carney, owner and designer of the property said: “A key design feature of the house is a turret made of natural slate. Due to the size of the property, using natural slate on the rest of the roof would have been cost prohibitive, so I searched for an alternative tile.

“I chose the Cassius as it has a thin leading edge and clean finish, which has enabled me to achieve a very aesthetic appearance. It is also colour permanent, ensuring a very durable roof.”

The large format design of the Cassius means that only 10.5 slates are required per square metre so labour and materials are kept to a minimum. As it is interlocking and features an open gauge, it is quick and easy to fix with installation times comparable to those of large format concrete tiles.
