The new performing arts space at Frensham Heights School in Farnham provides a state-of-the-art facility at the heart of a traditional school, which is part of a conservation area.
Nestled in a clearing behind the main music building is a music school rehearsal space. Built to provide a flexible space for recitals and rehearsals, the building combines the internal space with spill out areas and terraces to make the most of the surroundings.
Western Red Cedar Shingles were specified to help the building blend into its natural environment as the courtyard looks over a woodland glade. As the roof weathers it will soften and provide a low maintenance durable roofing solution.
The shingle roof is a complex combination of dormer pop ups within a tapered main roof area. Shingles are a forgiving material to work with, but the designed dormers were off centre, the ridgeline slopes and the verge is curved, making it difficult to keep the course straight.
Due to the use of the facility, the roof build-up had to achieve a high acoustic specification.
Technically, the installation of the roof was very difficult. As the detailing was so complex, specialist roofing contractor Attelys Roofing Ltd ,created sample panels for different details and sent them to the specifier for approval, enabling the architect to envisage how the detailing would look upon completion.
Installing the shingles to deliver the designed visual effect required a high level of skill and attention to detail. Correctly specified, and expertly installed, the JB shingle roof will now provide the school with a low maintenance, weather tight solution for many years to come.
