Having previously worked on 8 preceding Shurgard projects, Jacksons Fencing were chosen for the manufacture, supply, and install of fencing and gates for Shugard’s new development of the UK’s largest storage facility in Greenwich.
The new store consists of 4 stories, with over 1500 units available for hire and a large underground loading area.
After the successful completion of Shurgard’s Romford branch, Appian Construction were hired to manage the development.
With over 12000m2 of space, Shurgard provides personal and business storage units ranging from 15-240 sq ft.
Responsible for the safety and security of personal possessions and valuable assets, perimeter security and access control measures were an essential part of the development.
Security measures at the site include CCTV cameras, alarms, and sensor lighting, along with perimeter fencing and controlled gate access. The facility is divided into zones, each with its own PIN code, ensuring there is no unauthorised access by outsiders or users of separate zones.
In order to reduce the risk of break-ins and other criminal activity, Jacksons installed their Barbican® vertical bar fencing. Its welded pale-through-rail construction means that there are no bolts or palings that could be forced or removed to gain entry. To match the fencing, Jacksons supplied 4 single leaf gates, 3 of which were mesh clad to distinguish emergency access points as well as provide additional security.
Included in the design was an external waste compacting unit which was enclosed with fencing to reduce the risk of injury to the public and prevent criminal activity.
To ensure there was good visibility for CCTV at the rear of the site, Jacksons installed Euroguard® Extra, a welded mesh, anti-climb barrier which prevents the smuggling of prohibited items thanks to its small apertures. An additional 3 matching gates were installed for maintenance use.
To create access points around the site 4 cantilever Sentry® gates were installed, ideally suited to areas where space is limited and where a higher level of security is required. Due to the application of nylon wheels, cantilever sliding gates are remarkably quiet, making them appropriate for sites that operate outside of normal business hours.
A trackless bi-folding speed gate was also installed to provide quick access control in the event of an emergency, offering the same smooth and quiet operation as our cantilever gates.
The new building achieved an ‘Excellent’ rating against the BREEAM method, developed by BRE Group to assess the sustainability of buildings. Jacksons Fencing complies with this, offering an industry-leading 25 year guarantee with all steel and timber products as standard.
