South Kesteven District Council, Bourne and Stamford

Type of works: BritLock specified for major re-roofing scheme.

As part of its plans under the government's Decent Homes initiative, South Kesteven District Council has recently used a Sandtoft product for a major re-roofing scheme. The local authority, which is responsible for 127,500 people and a 365 square mile area in South West Lincolnshire, specified BritLock for the project which included homes in the towns of Bourne and Stamford.
The houses concerned were originally built with traditional slate roofs and the council was keen to stay true to this architectural heritage. However, it was also conscious of its need to set an example in terms of its use of sustainable building products and working practices, since many of the most affordable slates are imported into the UK from as far afield as China and South America they have a high carbon footprint and so South Kesteven DC wanted to source a greener alternative. They found it in BritLock.
One of the most sustainable roofing products on the market, BritLock is made from 80% recycled slate sourced entirely from within the British Isles. Even more impressively, it is produced at Sandtoft’s plant in Yorkshire, which is the first carbon neutral roofing factory in the country.
Aside from these impressive green credentials, BritLock offered South Kesteven DC other notable benefits. This included dramatically reduced installation times and costs. Unlike conventional slate, BritLock does not have to be graded and holed on-site and thanks to its interlocking design, there is no need to install the tile double-lapped, thus offering significant savings in material and time.
Speaking of the project, Nick Oldridge, Sandtoft’s Sales and Marketing Director, commented: “We are delighted to have been involved in this project and to have helped another local authority meet its commitments under the Decent Homes initiative. We are particularly proud of our work with South Kesteven District Council as it’s a prime example of how our products allow customers to innovate, rather than compromise, to save time and money.”
