SPM at Bishop Auckland Hospital

SPM at Bishop Auckland Hospital

Corridors in hospitals suffer more than most from wear and tear resulting from high levels of traffic and impact damage from trolleys, wheelchairs and equipment. SPM offer a range of cost effective wall and door protection products as a solution to these problems and have supplied numerous hospitals throughout the UK and Europe.

Prevention is better than a cure as constant wall and door damage results in repetitive maintenance work such as re-painting and plastering and in most cases this work accounts for a large proportion of the maintenance budget.

SPM have recently installed their wall protection and handrails to preserve the pristine condition of the interior at Bishop Auckland Hospital, a Private Finance Initiative scheme.

The architect for the project ‘Percy Thomas Partnership’ specified SPM’s heavy duty corner protection, a 200mm trolley rail for mid level protection and a 120mm trolley rail for lower level protection, in the hospitals main corridors.

The same kind of protection has been used in ward areas together with SPM’s combined hand & wall protection rail. Doors have also been protected throughout the hospital with SPM’s Decosheet.

Two colours were chosen from SPM’s wide range; ‘Vanilla’ for the corridors which complemented the changing wall colours on each floor and ‘Silica’ for the wards. These neutral colours give continuity throughout the hospital whilst allowing subtle differences between each floor level.

SPM’s in-house installation service was used to fix the products. SPM offer supply only or supply and fix on all projects regardless of size. Their installation service takes full account of all the factors involved in working on site such as compliance with the building’s health and safety policies. Sometimes a client prefers to use his own labour force. In such instances SPM are happy to provide supervision for whatever period is needed to train staff in product installation.

“The SPM products were quick and simple to install whilst achieving a high level of performance. The smooth finish was particularly appealing as hygiene is an important issue on all health projects. Bishop Auckland is a large hospital so efficient delivery of large quantities of products was essential and the delivery service SPM provided allowed our needs to be met.“ Project Manager of Shepherd Construction.
