Client: St. Leger Homes
Contractor: K Waddington & Sons Roofing Contractors Ltd
Type of works: supply and installation of Sandtoft's Romulus clay roof tiles.

St. Leger Homes, the social housing management company for Doncaster Borough Council, has selected Sandtoft’s Romulus clay roof tile for its properties in Dunscroft, making it the first social housing company in the UK to use this new tile in a re-roofing project.

The management company selected the manufacturer’s Romulus clay Double Roman tile for the refurbishment of the Broadway Estate as part of the Government’s Decent Homes Programme. The £850,000 re-roofing project, which involves both two-and three-bedroom houses that are approximately 70 years old, took only three months to complete.

Robert Sleight, Senior Project Manager at St. Leger Homes said: “When selecting the new roof tiles we wanted an aesthetic roof covering that would complement the surrounding properties in the area. The tiles also needed to be cost effective yet durable.

“We originally planned to use concrete Double Roman tiles to match the surrounding roofs. After speaking to Sandtoft and seeing the alternatives side by side, our construction partner, Bramall Construction, agreed that the clay tile was the best solution as it offered weight savings over its concrete equivalent.”

The Romulus is part of Sandtoft’s New Generation range which has been developed to make natural clay more affordable on the roof. The tile’s open gauge design ensures that it is as fast and easy to install as any concrete tile making it the perfect solution for a project of this nature.

Andy White of K Waddington & Sons Roofing Contractors Ltd, who undertook the work, said: “Our roofers found the tiles quick and easy to lay. They offer a realistic alternative to Double Roman concrete tiles and have resulted in an excellent finish.”

Nick Oldridge, Sales and Marketing Director for Sandtoft added: “Romulus clay tiles are lighter than concrete tiles, which reduces the need to replace the structural timbers and allows social housing providers like St. Leger Homes to complete refurbishment projects quickly and minimise disruption for tenants. The whole New Generation range offers social landlords considerable cost savings and because they are made from natural clay, are colour permanent, providing a natural aesthetic roof that is guaranteed for at least 60 years.”
