Stepney Green Tube Station, London

Client: Metronet
Type of works: installed flame retardant surface edge tile

Visul Systems, working with Metronet has recently completed the installation of its flame retardant surface edge tile (specifically designed for underground stations complying with BS 476 and 6853) on Stepney Green Tube Station.

Visul’s fire resistant edge tile was chosen as the preferred solution because it is quick and easy to install and fully complies with strict regulations for underground/undercover stations. The first of its kind for a surface mounted tactile system in the UK.

Specialist sub contractor USL StructureCare successfully applied over 600 of the uniquely manufactured fire resistant tiles to both platforms of this sub surface tube station.

To overcome undulations in the bituminous platform a 100mm wide adhesive fillet was applied to the exposed tile edges (75mm wider than standard practice). Contracts Manager Bill Ewing explained “our ability to work closely with the client is drawn from over 25 years knowledge and experience in the civil engineering and construction industries.”

The constraints of the contract necessitated that all works on the platform would be undertaken within 3 hours (maximum) overnight engineering works to minimise commuter disruption often utilising 6 men installation crews. Effective programme management meant works were completed on time and budget to the complete satisfaction of the client.
