Supporting a trip of a lifetime to Sierra Leone

Supporting a trip of a lifetime to Sierra Leone

Brewers were honoured to be able to support two legendary DJs and two prolific artists in their mission to support a charity campaign that will help change lives and save lives through music and art. Over £1,000 worth of product and extra Brewers goodies were donated to create a series of murals with the help of local young adults.

Organised by dance music charity Last Night A DJ Saved My Life (LNADJ), the trip saw producer Steve Mac, graffiti artist Inkie, creative music educator Richie Littler and abstract artist Nicolas Dixon visit Freetown, the capital, to deliver the charities ‘Get Equipped’ and ‘Street to Street’ projects.

The quartet flew to Sierra Leone with a strong contingent on November 17th and spent five days working with vulnerable and conflicted young adults at the WAYout Arts project, using music and art to inspire creativity and help members re-engage with education. Through fun and intensive workshops, they shared their knowledge and provided the foundations of learning for budding artists.

WAYout Arts supports street, vulnerable, and conflict-affected young adults through the arts. With a life-changing programme of activities, this ground-breaking project offers training, shelter, and the opportunity to drive social change through filmmaking and music.

Nicolas Dixon and Inkie (aka Tom Bingle), took part in the ‘Street to Street’ initiative. They delivered workshops and worked collaboratively with the young adults to paint the WAYout Arts studio building - sharing skills and inspiration along the way.

Nicolas and Inkie painted 4 big scale murals with the help of the amazing people from Wayout Arts Centre. One of the murals takes pride of place underneath a famous bridge at the top of Freetown overlooking the city in a slum, which is home to hundreds of people along the riverbank.

“The humility of these people was both humbling and inspiring. We ran workshops with them, and they were so receptive to these that they are continuing these in our absence. They have murals planned to paint in the city with the paint and materials that we took over with us and were donated by Brewers paints in Leeds.

We have now secured a sponsor for 2 of the people to be teachers so they can teach the others. It’s amazing to see them carry on this creativity and has truly changed their lives.”
-Nicolas Dixon, Abstract Artist.
