Tameside Hospital, Ashton-under-Lyne

Client: Tameside Hospital
Architect: Keppie Design
Fabricator: Red Aluminium
Type of works: supply of two automatic sliding doors and a range of door closers and floor springs.

To provide smooth, efficient access to patients, visitors and staff at the new Tameside Hospital, DORMA, manufacturers of door controls, automatics and movable walls, installed two ES 200 automatic sliding doors. In addition, the company also supplied a range of products for internal doors, including door closers and floor springs, as part of a complete package of door controls.

Designed by leading architects Keppie Design, the new £78 million Tameside Hospital is located eight miles east of Manchester. The impressive facility is part of a 30 year scheme that includes the design, build, finance and operation of the hospital.

With responsibility for the maintenance of the building over the next 30 years being the contractors, the specification of products that would offer proven performance was of paramount importance. When it came to choosing the automatic doors which would be in use 24/7 and the door closers for the internal doors which would also be under constant use, DORMA met the criteria.

Serving a population of 250,000 residents and operational 24 hours a day, a stylish and durable automatic door system was required for the hospital’s main entrance. Requiring an automatic door system that would maintain the smooth, regular traffic flow and provide suitable heat retention for patient and staff comfort, specialist fabricator Red Aluminium specified two ES 200 automatic sliding doors from DORMA.

Specially designed to meet the requirements of every sliding door application, the ES 200 provides exceptional performance and reliability. Easy to install and set-up, the ES 200 features a powerful new motor and dynamic acceleration/deceleration control capability to ensure safe and reliable operation – ideal for the regular and often heavy footfall of a busy hospital entrance.

With virtually silent operation and a new microprocessor that automatically controls the doors’ opening and closing speeds for additional safety, the ES 200 met all of the functional demands of the project. With a sleek, contemporary appearance that perfectly complemented the hospital’s modern aesthetics, the ES 200 combines functionality with elegance.

To withstand the constant use and harsh demands of a busy hospital environment, the internal doors required a product that would guarantee high performance and reliability. Following the successful use of DORMA door controls on a number of previous products, Red Aluminium specified DORMA TS 83 and TS 73 EMF door closers.

In total, DORMA provided 36 x TS 83 door closers and 4 x TS 73 EMF electro-magnetic door closers, as well as 10 x BTS 80 floor springs, 6 x BTS 80 EMB electro-magnetic floor springs and 2 x AD 4401 panic bolts for use on doors located in the building’s corridors.

Now complete, the visually impressive entrance further reinforces Tameside Hospital’s position as an excellent example of modern healthcare. Thanks to the high quality range of products provided by DORMA, the hospital is now assured smooth and reliable access through both its external and internal doors.
